Welcome to the PSV Newsletter!

We are glad that you’ve stopped by.

The Presbytery of Scioto Valley (PSV) has moved to an electronic newsletter.

Each week a printable newsletter is compiled, you can download it here.

In addition, the individual articles are posted to this website.

The website and the download (PDF) versions contain the same things, you do not need to read both. Choose which one you prefer.

If you are familiar with “blogs” then the format will be very familiar to you. If not, see the section below which describes how some features work.

Have something you’d like to see posted to the website? Send it to newsletter@psvonline.org. All submissions are reviewed.

Congratulations and best wishes to The Rev. Carol Weiss on her recent retirement from Condit Presbyterian Church!

The “Rev. Mrs.”, as she was fondly called, enjoyed a church full of grateful and tearful church members and friends as she said goodbye to her Condit family the last Sunday in March.    (photo attached)

A Way to Give Help to Myanmar/Burma

Dear Friends and folks who pray for us,

You are seeing on the news what is happening in Myanmar/Burma. Due to security concerns I cannot give particulars about groups and people, but through some folks at Payap University we have a little footpath into the disaster.

Here is what our folks are saying:

“We want to help victims and affected villages in Myaung Mya township area, which is located in the Irrawaddy Division. In our last meeting with some teachers, we have decided to select five volunteer students who would like to serve in affected villages and do not have money for airfare to go back to Myanmar. We will try to raise funds for their airfares. These students will be going to help in villages in Myaung Mya township which is in Irrawaddy Division. According to some news reports, the military has been transferring the victims from Laputta to Myaung Mya. Therefore, we will be able to help the people there who are really in great need.

For those who would like to know in more details, please go to Room G103 at Graduate Building. You will be provided with more information. For everyone’s safety, please do not mention the names or forward the emails unless necessary.

Sincerely,
PMSF Committee”

A TESOL student adds:
“I just wanted to pass along some news on the area that our students are focused on assisting. Below are some excerpts from news articles that mention MyaungMya Township, where our students know the local pastors and leaders and will be sending their aid.

As you can see, according to news reports, MyaungMya has become the first point of relief and the transit point for refugees coming from the devastated southwestern Delta Coast, that includes the Laputta area where, at the least, 10,000 have died. This area is also the furthest in the flooded Delta area from Yangon, so its remoteness may also be a point of vulnerability for the people. From other information I have seen there are also many Christians and ethnic Karen people in this area.

So, in addition to our students having good and trustworthy connections in the Delta, the area they are sending aid to is perhaps one of the areas of greatest need and a natural logistical center from which extensive assistance will be carried out in the weeks and months ahead.

The link below has maps of the area. MyaungMya is located just above Laputta, in the bottom left corner.

There are many good agencies to donate to including World Vision with whom we may work. But if you would like to support this tiny local effort, you may. If you donate more than $200 send a check made out to Payap University and send it to me, Esther Wakeman, Payap University, Chiang Mai 50000, Thailand. I’ll get it put in the fund. If you send less than $200, make the check out to me, and send it to my parents: Al and Thelma Wakeman, 4753 State Route 12, Pandora, OH 45877. They’ll let me know the totals and we’ll make a check here to Payap University. This saves on expensive check cashing costs in Thailand.

Thanks for your prayers, too; they are most needed and desired by our friends at Payap directly affected by this immense tragedy.

#2) Worthington Presbyterian Church’s Celebration Of Sound Concert Series Presents Gospel Mass

The Celebration of Sound Concert Series at Worthington Presbyterian Church will present Robert Ray’s Gospel Mass on Sunday, May 4, in the 9:00AM and 11:00AM worship services. Scored for chorus, soloists, and jazz trio, the work will be sung in collaboration between the choirs of Worthington Presbyterian and St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church. Assisting the chorus will be bassist Mendell Hibbard, pianist Cayce Felber, and percussionist Bryan Linville.

Composed in 1978, Gospel Mass is Mr. Ray’s interpretation of ancient liturgical tradition with the music of the African-American Church. The composer states “It is my desire to combine centuries of old traditions of Mass settings with sounds of the contemporary Black Church. The move from Latin to English created new opportunities for composers to express their feelings about the texts of the Ordinary of the Mass. I wanted everyone to experience the sense of joy and celebration that is generally felt in true African-American worship.”

Worthington Presbyterian Church, located at 773 High Street in Worthington, has been present in the Worthington community since 1805. With a congregation of more than 1,900, the church draws attendees from Worthington as well as throughout central Ohio, including Clintonville, Columbus, Delaware, Dublin, Gahanna, Galloway, Hilliard, Lewis Center, New Albany, Plain City, Pickerington, Powell, Westerville, and beyond. St. Andrew Presbyterian Church ‘First Sundays’ Series

‘MUSIC: From Inspiration to Publication and Beyond’
Garry A. Cornell, Director of Music, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church

What happens to those notes or lines of a tune in a composer’s head that become music? From notation and harmonization to transcription into a universal “vocabulary” all musicians understand, the creative and practical process can be challenging. What about publication? Copyright? Marrying text to tunes? What happens when the printed page leaves the publisher and goes into the world to be sung?

Garry Cornell has directed the St. Andrew Choir since November, 2001. He is the author of over 500 musical compositions for everything from choirs and congregations to orchestra and marching bands, from works of musical theater to TV commercials and documentaries. Mr. Cornell is the owner and director of publications of Celebrations Unlimited, a music publishing company he founded in 1977. He has served as consultant to and editor for several leading publishers of church music.  Each year since 1979 The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) has honored Garry with an award for his “ongoing contribution to American music.”
