Frank Hare honored at Jenco Awards

The Rev. Frank Hare of Amesville was among those honored recently at the sixth annual Jenco Awards in Athens.

The awards go to residents of the Appalachian corridor of West Virginia and Ohio who are instrumental in improving the quality of life for those living in the area.

Hare was recognized with the Inspired Community Service Award for his local and international ministries, advocating for the poor in the area and service work.

Catherine Hare received the award in 2005. Both were nominated by a member of the Amesville / New England Parish.

The Father Martin Lawrence Jenco Foundation was established in 2001 by Athens resident Terry Anderson, Associated Press correspondent, to honor the priest who was imprisoned with him in Lebanon for 19 months until 1991.

A second Presbyterian honored this year is retired India Medical Mission worker Dr. Ronald Seaton who with his wife continues to provide medical service in the Hinton WV area.

Frank Hare began his Athens County ministry in 1967, serving The Athens Area Ministry of congregations at New England, Amesville, Doanville and Alexander.

He has been minister of the Amesville-NewEngland Cooperative Parish since 1981 while serving with the Coalition for Appalachian Ministry. He has also served as Mayor of Amesville since 1992.

Hare and his family took this ministry to Nicaragua beginning in 2002 helping low-income families improve their food supplies and nutrition levels through agricultural training.

Son Mark Hare continues as a MIssion Worker for the PCUSA now in Haiti. The Hare family is known in the Presbytery for their work with Geneva Hills Camp and in particular with specialty camping experiences.

Amesville / New England Parish celebrates 20 years

John Gilmore and Frank & Catherine Hare On Sunday, October 7, the Amesville Presbyterian Church held a celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the formation of the Amesville/New England Cooperative Parish in Athens County.

The worship celebration included an inspiring bell choir, special music by 2 young sisters, greetings from Frank Hare, and a great sermon by John Gilmore, former student pastor and the first Commissioned Lay Pastor in Scioto Valley.

These 3 congregations, the United Methodist and Presbyterian Churches in Amesville and the Presbyterian Church in New England, worked together closely for many years before they officially came together in 1987 to form this Ecumenical Cooperative Parish.

The First Presbyterian Church in Athens serves as a Partner in Mission.

The covenant agreement for the Amesville-New England Parish includes combined worship, church school and other programs.

This Cooperative Parish also provides a broad range of outreach programs to the community, the surrounding area and around the world!

Congratulations to The Reverend Frank and Educator Catherine Hare for so generously sharing their many talents, gifts and creative energy with this parish for over 20 years!

Ted and Sue Wright.jpg During October, 2007, over 140 presbyteries will be visited by a mission co-worker for one week.  These missionaries will be inviting every PC(USA) congregation to be in relationship with at least one PC(USA) co-worker. The PSV Global Missions Committee has scheduled Ted to speak at the following area gatherings:

Pastor’s Insight Was A Gift

The following article was originally published in the Columbus Dispatch on Friday, September 28, 2007, marking Phil Hazelton’s retirement. Reprinted with permission of The Columbus Dispatch. Hazelton_Dispatch.jpg Picture Bob Newhart in the pulpit, wearing a black robe and white clerical collar.

That was my first impression of the Rev. Dr. Philip Hazelton of Worthington Presbyterian Church. Same dry humor, same folksy delivery, same deep reservoir of wisdom.

Gallipolis Church read the Bible in 90 Days

GFPC-BIND-Oval.jpg Sometime late last spring, Rev. Timothy J. Luoma happened across the Bible in 90 Days website and immediately thought, “90 days?! That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard!”

But then… the more he thought about it, he decided it was something he wanted to try. “Hrm, if I turn it into a Sunday school class, that would keep me from giving up!” So he started talking up the idea from the pulpit and in the church newsletter. “I really had no idea if anyone else would be interested, especially over at 9 on Sunday morning!”

The first Sunday we had about 20 people show up (given that a “good Sunday” attendance is about 100, this was especially encouraging). The final Sunday we had about 20 people show up, and attendance stayed consistent all through the summer. In addition we had several others who were reading along at home. Each week’s sermon came from the readings of the week ahead.

Waverly Presbyterian and Rick Hays celebrate 20th Anniversary

waverly.jpg

On Sunday, September 30, worshipers at the Waverly First Presbyterian Church marked the 20th anniversary of their pastor’s service with a special fellowship time following the service.

The Rev. Richard S. Hays began his ministry in Waverly October 1, 1987, following an eleven year pastorate at the Rockford, Ohio, Presbyterian Church. With his guidance and support, in 2001 the congregation moved out of an 1840’s inaccessible downtown building into a contemporary, functional, hospitable (and, since 2005, debt-free) building with room to grow and expand if the need presents itself.

The church session surprised Rick and his wife Paula this summer by presenting them with a four week sabbatical opportunity. They attended the National Pastor’s Sabbath in Snowbird, Utah, spent a week at Ghost Ranch, and attended a week-long training event on church transformation in Chicago, in addition to wonderful sight-seeing in the Southwest.

Since becoming a member of Scioto Valley Presbytery, Rick has been involved a many aspects of the presbytery’s work. He chaired the former Division of Care of Churches, the Bills and Overtures committee, and the Hanging Rock Area ministry. He was presbytery moderator 1998-99 and was a commissioner to two General Assemblies. He was recently elected Stated Clerk of the presbytery and will be installed at the November presbytery meeting.

Paula serves as choir director the Waverly church. For seven years she was a Christian Education consultant for the Hanging Rock Area and coordinator for the presbytery’s Jackson resource center.

When Rick and Paula moved to Waverly their children Elizabeth and were ages 11 and 7, respectively. Today, Elizabeth uses her Ph.D. in physics at NASA’s Goddard Space Center, Greenbelt, MD, and Drew recently completed work for his D.F.A. in Music from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and is teaching at Greensboro’s Guilford College.

Morning Star Presbyterian Parish to Continue

In September of 2005 the congregations of First and Second Presbyterian Churches, Portsmouth, voted to establish the Morning Star Presbyterian Parish.

The agreement outlined the creation of a parish council and the mechanism for sharing a pastor. With the retirement of the Rev. Evan Fisher on December 31, 2005, the Rev. Stanley N. Webster began serving as designated pastor at First Presbyterian, while continuing his duties as installed pastor at Second Presbyterian. The congregations extended equal terms of call that called for an equal distribution of pastoral time.

The parish agreement specified that in 2007 the congregations would vote again on whether to continue the parish. Last Sunday, the congregations met and voted on the motion: “to approve the continuation of the Morning Star Presbyterian Parish.”

One hundred people voted that day; 93 were in favor of the motion, 7 opposed. This vote imposed no term on the parish agreement, paving the way for the parish to continue as long as both congregations are willing.

In November, our Executive Presbyter, Dana Knapp will meet with the session at First Presbyterian to outline steps for calling Stan Webster as installed pastor. Members of the Presbytery will then conduct a service of installation at First, Portsmouth. This fall marks the twelfth anniversary of Webster’s service to Second, Portsmouth.

The agreement that the congregations approved in 2005 will be now be re-worked into by-laws for the parish. Those by-laws, along with the Book of Order, will be the framework within which changes in the parish can be made. Each congregation and each Session maintains its full constitutional powers and duties as spelled out in the Book of Order.
