#2) Worthington Presbyterian Church’s Celebration Of Sound Concert Series Presents Gospel Mass

The Celebration of Sound Concert Series at Worthington Presbyterian Church will present Robert Ray’s Gospel Mass on Sunday, May 4, in the 9:00AM and 11:00AM worship services. Scored for chorus, soloists, and jazz trio, the work will be sung in collaboration between the choirs of Worthington Presbyterian and St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church. Assisting the chorus will be bassist Mendell Hibbard, pianist Cayce Felber, and percussionist Bryan Linville.

Composed in 1978, Gospel Mass is Mr. Ray’s interpretation of ancient liturgical tradition with the music of the African-American Church. The composer states “It is my desire to combine centuries of old traditions of Mass settings with sounds of the contemporary Black Church. The move from Latin to English created new opportunities for composers to express their feelings about the texts of the Ordinary of the Mass. I wanted everyone to experience the sense of joy and celebration that is generally felt in true African-American worship.”

Worthington Presbyterian Church, located at 773 High Street in Worthington, has been present in the Worthington community since 1805. With a congregation of more than 1,900, the church draws attendees from Worthington as well as throughout central Ohio, including Clintonville, Columbus, Delaware, Dublin, Gahanna, Galloway, Hilliard, Lewis Center, New Albany, Plain City, Pickerington, Powell, Westerville, and beyond. MUSIC: From Inspiration to Publication and Beyond

(Note: this was the only new item received for the newsletter for the week of 2008-04-20, so it is included here in lieu of a full newsletter. It can be downloaded as a flyer (PDF) suitable for printing).

St. Andrew Presbyterian Church ‘First Sundays’ Series

‘MUSIC: From Inspiration to Publication and Beyond’
Garry A. Cornell, Director of Music, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church

What happens to those notes or lines of a tune in a composer’s head that become music? From notation and harmonization to transcription into a universal “vocabulary” all musicians understand, the creative and practical process can be challenging. What about publication? Copyright? Marrying text to tunes? What happens when the printed page leaves the publisher and goes into the world to be sung?

Garry Cornell has directed the St. Andrew Choir since November, 2001. He is the author of over 500 musical compositions for everything from choirs and congregations to orchestra and marching bands, from works of musical theater to TV commercials and documentaries. Mr. Cornell is the owner and director of publications of Celebrations Unlimited, a music publishing company he founded in 1977. He has served as consultant to and editor for several leading publishers of church music.  Each year since 1979 The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) has honored Garry with an award for his “ongoing contribution to American music.”
