I would love to have a quarter for every time over the years I have heard the phrase “General Assembly, they….” as though GA were some sort of nefarious entity in which most of us have no part. I could have retired a very rich woman, and sadly, nothing could be further from the truth. In the words of the immortal Pogo, “We have met the enemy and they are us.” Presbytery, Synod and General Assembly are us. You elect your session, sessions elect commissioners to presbytery and presbyteries elect commissioners to Synod and General Assembly. With all that said, we have a chance to bring some changes to the Book of Order. We will be voting on Amendments to our Constitution at our stated meeting on February 19. The amendments will be part of the docket for the meeting, but they are posted on our website now so you will have plenty of time to read them and make an informed decision. In addition, our Commissioners to the 2018 General Assembly will be prepared to answer questions and make recommendations based on discussions at GA. Even if you are not a commissioner to the presbytery, I encourage you to become familiar with the amendments and how they might change our constitution. And, as always, please feel free to contact me if you have questions.
